Following the 30-day expiration within which his election can be challenged at the tribunal, governor-elect of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu has giving the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC thumbs up for conducting acceptable elections.
Akeredolu gave the commendation on Wednesday in an interview with journalists in his Owo home town.
The governor-elect spoke shortly after the expiration of the statutory time for institution of a legal action against his election. Akeredolu contested on the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC in the Nov. 26 governorship poll. The 30-day period within which a petition can be made against the election result has ended without any petition filed at the tribunal.
“It is not because I won the election. I believe INEC is perfecting its act. It is moving toward conducting acceptable elections.
“If INEC gets to that level, many more elections will not be contested at the tribunal,” he said.
Akeredolu noted that his fellow contestants exhibited a sense of maturity by not challenging his victory and specifically hailed the Peoples Democratic Party and Alliance for Democracy candidates, adding that the absence of a petition showed that the election was free and fair.
