Leverage on employment opportunities in Lagos, former LAWMA boss tells youths
A Lagos based environmentalist, Ola Oresanya, on Wednesday advised youths in the state to embrace the new employment opportunities offered by the government.
He spoke against the backdrop of the Lagos state government’s consolidated policy on the environment which was recently signed into law by Governor Akinwummi Ambode, to improve sanitation in the state and create employment in the environment sector.
Oresanya, the Chief Operating Officer, Globetech Remedial Nigeria Ltd, and a former General Manager of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), said all hands must be on deck to support the administration to reduce the high rate of unemployment in the state.
“We have to applaud the initiative of the state government to galvanise the efforts of the youths in the right direction, especially when the efforts of our youths these days are largely misapplied.
“Now the state government is doing a lot of sensitisation for the youths to be gainfully employed.
“Government wants to have more youths to take due advantage, especially in the area of sanitation, to make the city of Lagos cleaner and better, in line with the aspiration of the Akinwunmi Ambode administration,’’ he said.
The Consolidated Laws on the Management, Protection and Sustainable Development on the Environment in Lagos state and Connected Purposes, was signed into law by Governor Ambode on March 1.
It was signed after a public hearing organised by the Lagos House of Assembly Committee on the Environment on February 9, and its subsequent passage by the House on February 20.
Ambode also added that aside the fact that the initiative would create at least 27,500 jobs, the Community Sanitation Workers (CSW), who would be engaged, will receive several incentives.
They are also to enjoy tax reliefs and healthcare, life, injury and accident insurance benefits, all aimed at tackling poverty and the unemployment crisis.
