Nigerians have been reacting albeit furiously to the idea of President Muhammadu Buhari seeking medical treatment in the United Kingdom while on his annual vacation.
Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity had in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, said Buhari would in the course of the vacation undergo routine medical checkups while he is expected to resume work on Feb. 6, 2017. The statement added that the vacation is In line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
While Nigerians are not against the President going for his annual leave, they however faulted his decision to seek medical attention abroad instead of doing so at home especially in line with the change mantra of the government.
Many callers who reacted at different times to review of headlines of Nigerian newspapers Friday on Radio Continental 102.3FM and Rainbow 94.1FM, poured out their anger at the president for going to the UK for medical treatment instead of developing the health facilities in Nigeria to meet up with world standard and patronise same.
“Why would Buhari closed our borders against importation of major goods and food items and yet he is going abroad for medical treatment. What happened to the Aso Rock clinic where they have voted so much money for improved facilitiesâ€, queried one Mutiu, a caller on Rainbow 94.1FM.
Another caller on Radio Continental 102.3FM, described Buhari’s medical vacation in the UK as a fraud and a dent on his anti-corruption posture against the backdrop of the N3.2bn said to have been set aside for facilities upgrade for the Aso Rock clinic at the expense of government owned hospitals across the country.
Presidential spokesman, Adesina had while defending the position, says the president has the right like any Nigerian to seek medical attention anywhere of his choice.
