Onayiga bags NUJ Fellowship

Immediate Past President, NUJ, Chris Isiguzo presenting the Fellowship to Gbenga Onayiga
Seasoned Broadcast Journalist, Gbenga Onayiga has been inducted as a Fellow of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.
He was among five Veteran Journalists and past Leaders of the Union so honoured during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference of NUJ which took place in Owerri.
Others were former Presidents of the union, George Izobo, Smart Adeyemi, Lanre Ogundipe and former National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman.
Decorating the Recipients, the immediate past President of the union, Chris Isiguzo, noted that they have greatly helped to reposition the Union and uplifted Journalism Practice in Nigeria.
Onayiga, who was a National Vice President of NUJ, made great sacrifices to actualise several Workers' Welfare Packages before retiring as a Director in FRCN.
He was Chairman, NUJ Insurance Committee and represented NUJ in the Committee on Special Media Salary set up by former Information Minister, late Dora Akunyile. The Committee’s Report led to the payment of Weighing and Peculiarity Allowances to all Federal and some State Media Workers.
As the National Vice-President of NUJ, Onayiga also spearheaded the fight for the payment of Monetisation Arrears to Media Workers. He equally served on the Governing Board of the Nigerian Press Council.
A 1986 Graduate of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos, Onayiga holds a First Degree in Political Science and Masters in Media Arts from University of Abuja.
The Fellowship was the second to be awarded by NUJ since the Union was founded 69 years ago.
